3D PRINTING COST OPTIMIZATION: REDUCE FILTER REPLACEMENT EXPENSES

Among 3D printing technologies, direct metal laser melting (DMLM), also known as selective laser melting (SLM), is an additive manufacturing process that uses a high-power laser to fuse metal powder particles, creating complex three-dimensional objects from a computer-aided design (CAD) file. This is a powder bed casting technology, which means that the part is built up layer by layer from a bed of metal powder.

DMLM has several advantages over traditional subtractive production methods, such as machining and casting.

One of the best DMLM machines on the market is GE Additive’s Concept Laser Mlab Cusing 200R.

It is a versatile machine that can be used to create a wide variety of parts, including prototypes, production parts, and tooling.

The Mlab 200R can be used to process a variety of metal powders, including stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloy, and cobalt-chromium alloy.

The MLab Cusing 200R is equipped with a filter system with four filters that require frequent replacement, especially during heavy use. As a result, the cost of this consumable is significant.

When the customer came to us with a request to reduce operating costs, we analyzed the problem and developed an alternative: replacing the four filters with one.

Compared with the original replacement, this solution not only reduces costs but also increases service life, as the filter area increases by about 25%; the overall benefit to the customer is about -50% on operating costs.
